Why Start Organic Rose Gardening

If youve been wanting to start a rose garden but are worried about the chemical effects to your surrounding plants, trees, and grass then organic rose gardening is the option for you. By having an organic rose garden, you will be using all natural materials to create compost to fertilize and using all natural products to use as insecticide. Most environmentalists make a compost pile at home to help conserve space at their city dump. Every little bit we can do will help our environment.

Organic rose gardening will give you the satisfaction of knowing that you will not be putting any chemicals into the ground or air. Using chemical fertilizers could lock up carbohydrates in the soil that the plant needs. Using organic compost will help your rose garden flourish beautifully and naturally while not having to spend a lot of money doing it. Compost will improve your soil structure, texture water aeration and will increase the soils ability to retain water, an overall healthy environment for all plants.

Setting and keeping the soil at the right ph level is the best way for all roses to thrive. 6.5 is the most optimal ph balance for all roses and can be monitored easily with a ph balance checker. Using compost will even out the ph balance and produce nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus naturally with the help of feeding organisms. When the compost is done cooking, it has a rich, dark, earthy look with an abundance of humus that plants use and love.

To help you get on your way to making a compost pile for your organic rose gardening endeavor, I have put together a little list of items you can add to your compost pile or bin. When adding your items make sure to add some water to help moisten the matter. Too much water can make a nasty mess and too little water will not allow the micro-organisms to do their work. The microbes are essential to the compost since they are the ones doing all the work to turn you pile into "gold".

The items you can add are as follows:

Algae, seaweed and lake moss Good nutrient source.

Coffee grounds and filters Worms love coffee grounds and filters.

Corn stalks and corn cobs Shred and mix with nitrogen rich materials.

Manure from horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, and rabbits Great source of nitrogen. Carbon rich materials will help break the manure down better.

Milk, cheese, and yogurt be careful, this may attract animals.

Oak leaves Shred if adding to help decompose faster. Very acidic material.

Untreated sawdust and wood shavings Add when high in nitrogen.

Pine needles Acidic and decomposes slowly.

Sod can be added as long as your compost pile get up to 165 Degrees F.

Weeds can also be added if dried out on pavement in sun. Be careful because these could host bugs and other organisms if pile does not get hot enough.

Organic kitchen materials can also be added Banana peels, orange peels and some uneaten food.

A compost pile can be just that, a pile, or you can start a compost bin. You can manufacture your own compost bin or purchase one. Either one basically work the same. To help your pile to get to the best cooking temp, I would opt to use a bin, especially if adding lots of yard greens. When finding a location for your bin or pile, it is best to find a place away from the house. This will ensure that any nasty smells will not reach the house if not enclosed. Your organic rose garden will thrive for years with you compost pile. Organic rose gardening will help feel better knowing that you are doing your part to help the environment.
