Have you ever seen a rose tree garden? Rose trees are roses grafted twice; a rose plant/bush is grafted to a standard, then the standard is grafted to the rootstock. Rose trees may have several grafts leaving the rose tree with several colors when blooming. Being able to see a rose tree with 3 different color roses is a sight to see and can be a perfect accent to any herb garden, or rose garden. Rose trees take time to produce which makes them a little bit more expensive than normal rose bushes. Check your local nursery for prices. When planting your rose tree garden, properly preparing the soil is always key. Rose trees can be planted during the beginning to mid spring for the best results. Be careful when planting your rose tree garden, the cane or trunk may get sun scald. Prepare the soil as you would all other roses while making sure to add fertilizer. You may notice that the trunk of the rose tree is a little flimsy and because of this you will have to make sure to stake the rose tree good when planting. Your tree may not be able to hold itself up throughout the season without the properly placed stake.

Pruning the roses in the rose tree garden is also very important. Your rose tree may start to become heavier on one side. You will have to prune the side that becomes heavier so that the rose trunk does not collapse from the difference of the weight distribution. Staking the falling side is an option but not suggested. To prune you will need a pair of sharp scissors or knife, and you should cut directly above a leaf union or node, doing this will ensure that more growth can emerge. The stake should be strong enough to withstand your summer season.

When getting ready for the winter months, you will have to prune back hard. Do not ever prune the cane, only the part of the tree that is above the top graft. Once pruned you will have to protect the cane, by either transplanting it into a pot and taking it inside the garage, or surrounding it with mulch. To surround with mulch you can either mound the mulch around the cane or buy some chicken coupe wire and make a surrounding. Take the chicken coup wire and make a cylinder type fence around the rose tree in your rose tree garden and stake it to the ground, then go ahead and add mulch making sure to surround the entire trunk. Doing this will protect your rose tree garden from the winter weather while they are dormant.

Having a rose tree garden is a delight. They are a very beautiful addition to any back yard no matter the area. Rose tree gardens are a very rare sight and can be easily taken care of with the right information. If you would like to grow a rose tree garden, do enough research to make sure that those are the right type of roses for you.
